Job Description

The consultancy aims to produce a peace reporting manual for journalists in Zimbabwe that will serve as a tool that Zimbabwean journalists can rely on in their work and refer to for guidance on how to adopt a more peace-oriented approach to news reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities

It is envisioned that the consultant will:
1. Define peace and the role the media plays in fostering peace;
2. Briefly highlight how conflict and violence have affected Zimbabwe, how the Zimbabwean media has reported on the issues related to the conflict or violence, and the impact this has had on the overall conflict;
3. Define peace journalism and its importance in Zimbabwe;
4. Give practical guidance to journalists on how they can become peace journalists. This must be done through:
a. Demonstrating the difference between peace journalists and violence journalists
b. Providing a checklist that journalists can rely on to check if their reporting of news complies with the fundamentals of peace reporting
c. Giving practical examples of scenarios that journalists may be required to rely on and how they can report on those scenarios in a factual manner that promotes peace
5. Highlight examples from other countries of peace journalism in practice;
6. Identify challenges that journalists may encounter in practicing peace journalism and proffer solutions for those challenges, these challenges must include safety concerns that journalists may have as a result of their efforts to undertake peace reporting.

Qualifications and Experience

The suitable consultant must possess:
● A degree(s) in communications, journalism, law, peacebuilding, human rights, transitional justice, or a related social science degree, a post-graduate degree will be an added advantage.
● Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of transitional justice and journalism in Zimbabwe.
● At least five years of experience in undertaking similar work.
