Operating the grader, Communicating clearly with assistants, and other equipment operators to avoid utility lines, stakes, and ground crew
1. Precision Grading & Leveling
Surface Finishing: Operating the adjustable moldboard (the main blade) to level, smooth, and shape earth, stone, gravel, or asphalt surfaces to exact specifications.
Sloping and Bank Cutting: Adjusting the blade angle to cut side slopes, banks, and ditches along roadsides to ensure proper water drainage.
Sub-Grade Preparation: Laying down and flattening the foundational layers of earth before paving roads, runways, or building foundations.
2. Equipment Setup & Manipulation
Blade Controls: Managing multiple control levers or joysticks simultaneously to adjust blade height, tilt, angle, and side-shift while keeping the machine moving.
Using Attachments: Operating rear-mounted rippers or scarifiers to break up hard, compacted ground, asphalt, or ice before grading it.
GPS/Laser System Guidance: Utilizing modern 3D grade control systems (GPS/laser telemetry) integrated into the cab to hit precise finish elevations.
3. Safety, Inspection & Maintenance
Pre-Shift Inspections: Checking fluid levels (engine oil, hydraulic fluid), tire pressure, and looking for structural cracks or hydraulic leaks before starting the machine.
Blade Maintenance: Checking, flipping, or replacing the cutting edges (bolt-on blades) when they become worn down.
Site Awareness: Communicating clearly with grade checkers, spotters, and other equipment operators to avoid utility lines, stakes, and ground crew.
4. Reading Blueprints & Stakes
Interpreting Survey Marks: Reading and interpreting construction stakes, grade markers, and blueprints to know exactly how much dirt needs to be cut (removed) or filled (added).
