FCTZ was established by the deed of Trust in 1996 and registered in 1999 under the PVO act registration number PVO: 3/99. The organization was formed to take over a farmworker welfare program that had been implemented by Save the Children UK (SC UK) since the early 1980s. The focus then was to improve access to basic facilities like housing, water, education and health for the commercial large-scale farmworkers. The main strategy was to engage the farmer to assist in the provision of such facilities. The fast track land reform program implemented by the government in 2000 led to major changes in the form and structure of both the geographical areas of operation as well as the characteristics of original clientele. Since its inception FCTZ has operated in Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, Masvingo, Harare metropolitan and Manicaland provinces.
