To foster sustainable and effective interventions, NAZ works closely with national, regional, and international organizations to design and implement evidence-based nutrition programs across Zimbabwe. Job Description
Position summary:
The WASH Field Assistant will support implementation of the Start Ready Risk Pool 5 Readiness Project in Mwenezi District by providing technical and field-level support for WASH activities. The role will assist with water point assessments, borehole siting and drilling processes, water point committee training, stakeholder and community consultations, behaviour change and hygiene promotion activities, design inputs for a piped water scheme, preparation of Bills of Quantities for borehole repairs, data collection, documentation, and timely reporting to ensure project activities are completed within agreed timelines and targets.
Duties and Responsibilities
include but are not limited to:
Objective 1: WASH Technical Implementation
Support technical planning and readiness activities for the WASH component of the project.
Conduct assessments of water points and document their status, functionality, repair needs, service gaps, and rehabilitation requirements.
Support borehole siting, drilling, rehabilitation and solarisation activities in coordination with relevant technical personnel, local authorities, contractors and community structures.
Assist in monitoring contractors to ensure work quality and compliance with project specifications.
Contribute field-level technical inputs to the design of a piped water scheme as required by the project.
Prepare Bills of Quantities for borehole repairs and related WASH infrastructure works.
Objective 2: Community Mobilisation and Training
Facilitate effective engagement with communities, local leaders, committees, and stakeholders to support implementation of WASH activities.
Organize and facilitate training of water point committees, pump minders, health clubs, stakeholders, and local leaders in line with project requirements.
Conduct stakeholder and community consultations to support WASH planning, implementation, acceptance of project activities, and community feedback processes.
Support hygiene promotion and Social Behaviour Change Communication activities, integrating WASH messaging during community engagement and trainings.
Maintain coordination with district stakeholders, local leadership, community structures and project staff during field implementation.
Objective 3: Monitoring, Documentation and Reporting
Collect accurate field data relating to WASH assessments, infrastructure status, consultations, trainings, hygiene promotion sessions, and implementation progress.
Maintain proper documentation of activities, participant records, assessment findings, field observations, community feedback, project outputs, and filing records.
Support surveys, routine monitoring, data verification, and use of approved data collection tools such as Kobo Collect/ODK where applicable.
Prepare clear and timely field reports on WASH activities, progress, challenges, recommendations, lessons learned and follow-up actions.
Document project success stories, lessons learned and best practices, and contribute information required for project reporting under supervision.
Objective 4: Project Support
Provide field-level support to ensure WASH activities are implemented according to agreed workplans, standards, timelines and project targets.
Identify operational challenges during implementation and promptly escalate issues requiring technical or management attention.
Work collaboratively with project staff, technical focal persons, stakeholders, and community representatives to support successful implementation of the WASH component.
Perform any other related duties required to support successful implementation of the WASH component of the project.
Policy compliance – Mandatory Reporting Policy (MRP):
Comply with all NAZ policies.
Assist where necessary in undertaking activities that aim to prevent the occurrence of sexual abuse and exploitation of beneficiaries by NAZ and other humanitarian workers.
Confidentiality:
Ensuring the non-disclosure of any information whatsoever relating to the practices and business of NAZ acquired in the course of duty, to any other person or organization without authority, except in the normal execution of duty.
Note: The role of WASH Field Assistant cannot be limited to the specific duties and tasks detailed herein and may be adjusted in accordance with the needs and operational circumstances of the organization. The success of NAZ’s mission is the highest priority and all issues which arise must be addressed accordingly. Therefore, the WASH Field Assistant will be required to manage unforeseen field issues and remain flexible to perform other related duties, as and when required.
Qualifications
The following may be acquired through a combination of formal or self-education, prior experience or on-the-job training.
Education Qualifications and Experience
Degree in Development Studies, Water Governance, Environmental Studies, Public Health, Disaster Risk Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
At least 2 (two) years’ relevant experience in WASH field implementation, preferably including rural water systems, borehole rehabilitation, community engagement, and NGO programming.
Technical knowledge and practical experience in WASH programming, including water point assessment, borehole siting and drilling, water infrastructure repair planning, hygiene promotion, and community-based WASH activities.
Experience supporting stakeholder consultations, community mobilisation, training of water point committees, pump minders, health clubs, and coordination with local leaders.
Experience in data collection, documentation, report writing, Microsoft Office, and use of digital data collection tools such as Kobo Collect/ODK is an added advantage.

Support completion of assigned WASH activities within the one-month implementation period.
Escalate field challenges promptly and support agreed corrective actions.
Comply with NAZ policies, confidentiality requirements, and safeguarding standards during all field activities.
