Job Description

The Sorting Plant Foreman is responsible for the day-to-day supervision, coordination, and control of all sorting plant activities to ensure efficient, safe, and environmentally compliant operations. The role focuses on maximizing material recovery, maintaining operational discipline, enforcing health, safety, and environmental standards, and leading plant personnel to achieve production and quality targets.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Operations & Production Management
• Supervise all sorting plant activities, including manual and mechanical sorting of recyclable materials (plastics, paper, metals, glass, organics, etc.).
• Ensure optimal plant throughput while maintaining high recovery and contamination reduction rates.
• Monitor daily production outputs, material recovery volumes, rejects, and downtime.
• Ensure correct segregation of waste streams in line with recycling standards and operational procedures.
• Coordinate start-up, shutdown, and shift handovers to ensure smooth plant operations.
2. Workforce Supervision & Leadership
• Supervise and lead sorting plant operators, sorters, equipment attendants, and general hands.
• Allocate duties, manage shift rosters, attendance, and productivity of plant staff.
• Conduct toolbox talks, on-the-job training, and mentoring of employees.
• Enforce discipline, workplace conduct, and compliance with company policies.
• Identify skills gaps and recommend training or corrective action where required.
3. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
• Enforce strict compliance with Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) regulations and company SHEQ procedures.
• Ensure all employees use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently.
• Identify hazards, conduct risk assessments, and implement corrective actions.
• Report incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly and accurately.
• Ensure operations comply with environmental regulations, waste handling laws, and recycling standards.
4. Equipment & Plant Maintenance Coordination
• Monitor the condition and performance of conveyors, screens, balers, magnets, shredders, and other sorting equipment.
• Conduct routine inspections and ensure basic preventive maintenance is carried out.
• Report breakdowns and coordinate with maintenance teams to minimise downtime.
• Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained at all times within the plant.
5. Quality Control & Continuous Improvement
• Monitor material quality and contamination levels to meet recycling market specifications.
• Implement process improvements to enhance recovery efficiency and plant performance.
• Participate in operational audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with SOPs, work instructions, and quality standards.
6. Reporting & Administration
• Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports.
• Maintain accurate records on production volumes, staff attendance, incidents, and equipment performance.
• Assist management with data required for audits, compliance reporting, and performance reviews.

Qualifications and Experience

• Diploma or Degree in Waste Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
• Minimum 5–8 years’ hands-on experience in recycling, waste sorting, or materials recovery operations
• Proven experience in supervising or leading teams in an industrial or plant environment
• Strong practical knowledge of waste recycling processes, waste segregation, and material recovery systems
