Job Description

Deadline: 20 May 2022

About
Founded in the Netherlands in 1998 Young Africa (YA) currently operates 9 TVET centres in five countries as a confederation of independently and locally registered affiliated organizations. YA operates in 2 more countries in partnership with 4 other organizations that are replicating the YA model(s). Each Affiliate operates TVET - Centre(s), youth (self-) employment programs and community activities.

The vision of YA is a world of quality and shared word of equality where the power of young people is channelled to transform the world around them. The mission of YA is the integral development of disadvantaged youths aged 15 to 35 years with a special focus on young women and youths with disabilities. YA does this through imparting skills of the hands to youth to make them self-reliant, skills of the heart and mind to help them live with dignity and skills of the soul to help them live with a purpose.

YA’s core business is skills training for employability and entrepreneurship. YA delivers its training programme (the integral approach to youth development) through an innovative Franchise Business Model (FBM). The purpose of the FBM is: to grow the financial self-sustainability of YA centres; provide an opportunity for on-the-job exposure to trainees; franchisees acting as local entrepreneurial role models for youths that we train; and ensuring that YA centres participate in the local economy. In a way, the YA FBM model is intended to be a cost-efficient alternative to traditional cost-intensive TVET approaches.

YA’s operations have significantly expanded in the last 6 years with the beneficiary reach of its two largest operations in Zimbabwe and Mozambique having more than doubled. During the same period, YA expanded its operations into Botswana and Zambia with three new centres that were set-up. Since 2015, YA has been disseminating its models (including the FBM) to other youth-focused organizations. In 2017, the YA FBM was recognized by UNESCO UNEVOC as a promising best practice for delivering TVET. This added to the visibility of the work of YA which has grown significantly in recent years. As a result, there has been growing interest from other organizations wanting to replicate the YA models. As stated above, in Malawi and Ethiopia, YA is working with four partners to replicate the YA FBM model, namely SOS Children’s Villages Malawi & Ethiopia, Habitat for Humanity, and Children’s Fund Malawi. Apart from the lived experience of YA and other dissemination partners in using the FBM, there is no empirical evidence of the model’s efficacy. This is the reason this study is being commissioned.
