TENDER FOR ECOLOGIST CONSULTANCY
World Vision International Zimbabwe is inviting tenders from reputable
individuals/organizations to submit bids to conduct ecology consultancy for the
Strengthening Capacity for Ecosystem Service and Resilient Livelihood in Zimbabwe
project in Chimanimani District. World Vision Zimbabwe is implementing this project to
achieve a sustainable managed and well-functioning ecosystem among smallholders in
vulnerable communities to improve food, water security, and livelihoods, build resilience
to shocks, and adapt to and mitigate the impact of climate change with funding support
from World Vision USA and Rotary International.
Study Objective
The overall objective of this consultancy is for the ecologist to give technical guidance and
technical backstop to Ecosystems Services project implementation and will, inter alia,
execute the activities listed below in collaboration with the WVZ Mhakwe and Nyanyadzi
cluster implementing team and government stakeholders.

Terms of Reference for Ecologist Consultancy
Project Title: Strengthening Capacity for Ecosystem Service and Resilient Livelihood in Zimbabwe
Funding Unit: Ecosystems Service Project
Location: Home/ Office-based in Harare/ Zimbabwe
Duration: 8 months distributed across the two years

Background
World Vision Zimbabwe, will be implementing a two-year Ecosystems services project co-
funded by WVUS and Rotary international. The overarching goal of the project is to
achieve a sustainable managed and well-functioning ecosystem among smallholders in vulnerable communities to improve food and water security and livelihoods, build
resilience to shocks, adapting and mitigating the impact of climate change. The project will be implemented in Chimanimani District in Mhakwe an Nyanyadzi area programs, in
wards 9 and 20 respectively.]

Duties and Responsibilities

Scope of work
The overall objective of this consultancy is, for the Ecologist to give technical guidance
and technical back stopping to Ecosystems services project implementation and will inter
alia execute the activities listed below, in collaboration with WVZ Mhakwe & Nyanyadzi
cluster implementing team and government stakeholders.
The specific duties for the Ecologist Consultant will include:
• Providing technical guidance to Department of Irrigation and World Vision
Engineers on the extension of gravity fed Nyabande irrigation, using nature-based
solutions
• Providing input into baseline and end line ToRs and the actual evaluation processes
• Providing input into Detailed Implementation Plan and Indicator Targets
• Providing guidance on site selection for targeted interventions, such as nurseries
establishment and tree planting, FMNR sites, pasture, in consultation with
government stakeholders and the community
• Actively participate in quarterly project review meetings
• Actively participate in stakeholder joint monitoring visits
• Carry out field visits from time to time to monitor progress of implementation
• Providing training content (share documents that give detail of content) for the
following trainings (including development of any technical field manuals/guides
required for training, where applicable????)
1) Train community leaders, faith leaders, Ward Development Committee
on inclusive community institutions for sustainable use and protection of
communal resources (reach 2000)
2) Train community leaders, natural resources committee or community
development leaders in the development and strengthening of bylaws
for the protection and management of natural resources, equitable
access, and benefit sharing (reach 2000)
3) Train community members (including women and youth) on the
application Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) techniques
and practice (reach 2000)
4) Train Community members in improved grazing, pasture, and livestock
management (reach 2000)
5) Train smallholder farmers in regenerative agricultural practice (reach
2000)
• Conducting stakeholder consultations with key and relevant Government
departments one on one and/or through meetings/workshops, to assess capacity of
stakeholders and bridge the gaps in knowledge, skills and information necessary to
sustain project benefits after World Vision support has ended
• Conducting Training of Trainers (ToTs) workshop on the 5 training topics above (1
ToT per each training) in order to build the capacity of government stakeholders
and community members, who will cascade the trainings to other community
members in order to achieve the targeted reach
Supervision and payment schedule
The consultant will work in close daily coordination with the Program Manager of
Mhakwe & Nyanyadzi cluster and under the supervision of WV Zimbabwe Resilience, and
Livelihood Advisor
Payment for work done will be done following agreed milestones, with the final payments
made after successful completion of all the specific duties indicated above.
The amount includes all related costs for the Ecologist to conduct this consultancy,
including transportation, travel, communications and daily rates of supporting personnel.
All payments will be made by WVZ after clearance by the immediate supervisor indicated above.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications
The Consultant must demonstrate the following qualification and experience:
• Hold a graduate degree in ecology relevant field (biology, ecology, agriculture,
natural resources management, etc) with at least 5 years’ relevant experience of
working on landscape and natural resource management projects
• Have a proven record of working on Ecosystems Service projects and preferably
detailed familiarity with regenerative agriculture and Farmer managed natural
regeneration techniques
