Job Description

Leading the ethnographic work and process evaluations for the PACE interventions. The Social
Scientist will oversee research initiatives, manage process evaluations, and supervise research
personnel to ensure adherence to protocols and ethical standards. Additionally, they will lead the
Social Science Working Group, contribute to manuscript development, and assist in designing
SOPs for data collection. The incumbent will also take an active participation in CeSHHAR's
community, providing mentorship, and fulfilling additional responsibilities as directed by senior
management.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Leading and managing ethnographic research initiatives, from determining the appropriate
methodology to conducting comprehensive analyses
• Leading and managing process evaluation of to be developed PACE interventions, from
determining the appropriate methodology to conducting comprehensive analyses
• Working with the Research Coordinator to supervise the crafting and translation of essential
research documents, and secure necessary regulatory and ethical clearances for studies
• Overseeing the strategic planning, execution, and synchronization of research activities,
ensuring alignment with established protocols and project timelines
• Supervising research personnel, offering training and continuous support to ensure adherence
to study protocols, ethical standards, and data collection methods
• Contribute to manuscript development, infusing academic outputs and reports with nuanced
social science perspectives
• Leading the Social Science Working Group, including developing agendas, scheduling
meetings, steering discussions, and coordinating with group members to ensure a successful
execution of planned initiatives
• Assist in designing and leading the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
for data collection
• Working with project teams to ensure that data quality standards (as set in the relevant SOPs)
are met and periodically conduct audits to ascertain consistent adherence to SOPs.
• Active participation in CeSHHAR's citizenry – the Social Scientist is expected to actively
contribute to the sense of community and mutual support within CeSHHAR. This may involve
participating in regular meetings and discussions, providing mentorship to junior team
members and actively contributing to the organization’s culture and values
• Execute other duties as directed by the Principal Investigator, The Key Populations Director
and the Key Populations Research Portfolio Manager

Qualifications and Experience

• PhD in Social Sciences/Medical Anthropology/Ethnography or equivalent is essential
At least 8 years of research experience
• Experience of participating in mixed method evaluations of complex health interventions
desirable, particularly experience of conducting process evaluations or implementation
research
• Demonstrated prior experience working with female sex workers or other vulnerable and
marginalised groups desirable
• Ability to integrate participatory methods and community engagement into research design
• Prior experience conducting ethnographic fieldwork including participant observation
desirable
• Prior experience using qualitative data analysis software essential
• Ability to work well independently with a good understanding of qualitative research
methods
