Job Description

To oversee and coordinate all nursing and support activities within the operating theatre to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality perioperative care. The Sister-in-Charge provides leadership, supervision, and clinical expertise to theatre staff, ensuring adherence to professional standards, infection control protocols, and hospital policies.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Leadership and Management
• Supervise, lead, and motivate theatre nursing and support staff.
• Develop duty rosters and ensure adequate staffing levels for all surgical procedures.
• Identify training needs and coordinate ongoing professional development for theatre personnel.
• Participate in recruitment, orientation, and performance appraisal of theatre staff.

2. Clinical Oversight
• Ensure safe, efficient, and evidence-based nursing care for all surgical patients.
• Monitor compliance with aseptic techniques, infection prevention, and control standards.
• Oversee preparation and maintenance of operating rooms and equipment.
• Coordinate with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other multidisciplinary team members for smooth theatre operations.
• Participate in surgical procedures where clinical support is required.

3. Operational Management
• Plan and organize daily theatre lists in collaboration with surgeons.
• Ensure effective use and maintenance of theatre instruments, equipment, and consumables.
• Maintain accurate patient, procedure, and equipment records.
• Enforce adherence to health and safety protocols.

4. Quality Assurance and Risk Management
• Implement and monitor theatre policies, procedures, and standards of care.
• Participate in infection control audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Investigate and report incidents, near misses, and equipment failures promptly.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

5. Resource Management
• Monitor and manage theatre stock levels, including surgical instruments, linen, and medications.
• Prepare requisitions and maintain inventory control to prevent shortages or wastage.
• Contribute to budgeting and cost containment within the theatre unit.

6. Communication and Coordination
• Maintain effective communication with surgeons, anaesthetists, wards, CSSD, and pharmacy.
• Ensure accurate handover and continuity of patient care between theatre and recovery/ward teams.

Qualifications and Experience

• Post basic qualification in Theatre Nursing.
• Minimum of 5 years post-basic experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or senior theatre role.
• Sound knowledge of operating theatre techniques, infection control, and perioperative care.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
• Leadership and people management.
• Ability to work under pressure in emergency situations.
• High level of integrity and professionalism.
• Commitment to continuous quality improvement and patient safety.
