Job Description

CeSHHAR Zimbabwe is an organisation that specialises in population health research and programming, including on sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. CeSHHAR has a diverse range of funders which include the Wellcome Trust, Gates Foundation, NIH, UK Medical Research Council, Templeton World Charity Foundation, Global Fund for AIDS TB and Malaria, UNICEF and UNFPA. We partner very closely with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (UK), Zimbabwe's Ministry of Health and Childcare and international and regional centres of research excellence to evaluate national programmes and determine the impact, uptake, and cost effectiveness of novel reproductive health interventions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Funded by the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), this role will drive implementation of a mixed-methods study aimed at strengthening the health workforce to respond to the current and emerging health impacts of the climate crisis in Zimbabwe. The study is being done in close collaboration with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and partner institutions in Nepal. Operating between Harare and Mount Darwin, the position will build on the existing successful initiatives within the Climate, Environment and Health Department.
The Research Scientist position reports directly to study Principal Investigator and is housed within the Climate, Environment, and Health Department (CEHD). Working as part of a team, the Research Scientist will be responsible for overseeing study conduct, data analysis and publication of results. The individual will also be expected to work towards becoming an independent researcher by participating in activities such as grant writing and capacity strengthening. There is potential for the successful candidate to be offered a joint research position between CeSHHAR and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

Qualifications and Experience

A PhD in Epidemiology, Public Health, or related fields, with at least two years’ experience post PhD qualification. At least five years’ relevant experience conducting health-related research. Demonstrable appreciation/experience with study designs commonly used in implementation research, using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Ability to conduct statistical analyses using statistical software (STATA, SAS, R). Evidence of contributing to peer-reviewed journal articles, with at least three peer reviewed articles published as first author. Evidence of contributing to competitive research grant writing. Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively as part of a research team. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Project management experience, including managing research teams. Computer competency particularly with Microsoft Office packages. Ability to work with people from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Evidence of training in GCP and Research Ethics. Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, professionalism, a commitment to lead by example and dedication to CeSHHAR values and principles.
