The National Biotechnology Authority (NBA) is an autonomous research and development institution with a mandate to develop Zimbabwe through the application of both conventional and cutting-edge biotechnologies. Established through the National Biotechnology Authority of Zimbabwe (NBA) Act of 2006 [Chap. 14: 31]. Its role is to transform the country from a raw material-based into a knowledge–based economy through the judicious application of biotechnology.
The Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Department of the NBA is seeking to employ a Research, Development and Innovation Manager. The ideal candidate is someone who has solid leadership skills and experience, is knowledgeable of their subject area and passionate about science, has the ability to communicate with peers and superiors, has research, development and innovation skills, and can demonstrate a productive scientific portfolio. The appointment of an RDI Manager is critical to the day-to-day functions of the Department. The incumbent will report to the Director – Technical of the NBA.
• The RDI Manager will be required to undertake technical, managerial, and analytical duties to enable optimal functions within the RDI Department.
• Lead all RDI activities in the Department, ensure that all technical staff are well trained, offer support to the Technical Director, and ensure the efficient day-to-day running of all research facilities within the RDI.
• Effectively communicate with members of various scientific and technical teams to ensure that the processes are performed within prescribed guidelines and expected turnaround times.
• Ensure effective collaboration with the technical teams within and outside the organisation in order to achieve effective, efficient, high quality RDI outputs and testing services.
• Develop and validate analytical methods.
• Facilitate the establishment and safeguarding of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Compliance and Quality Management systems for all research facilities, including ISO17025, ISO9001 etc. and a LIMS for quality delivery, efficient record keeping and management within the Department.
• Ensure that all pieces of equipment are suitably maintained and consumables are well stocked for the efficient running of the Department.
• Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all laboratory equipment, materials and reagents.
• Keep track of laboratory stocks and making orders for replenishment of stocks.
• Track samples and test results.
• Manage all Scientific and General Staff within the Department.
• Seek funding and other resources.
• Set the standard for behaviour, be a role model and ensure that staff members comply with all laboratory rules and regulations, and guarantee the highest quality of results.
• Spearhead capital expenditure purchase decisions and seek funding to ensure efficient functions of the Department.
• Maintain laboratory staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees, etc.
• Ensure that Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Standards (GMP) are adhered to within all functions of the RDI and BED departments.
Qualifications and experience required
• Minimum educational level: At least a Master of Science degree, a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree (2.1 or better), with majors in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or related. Possession of a Ph.D. will be an added advantage.
• At least 5 years’ experience in research, academia or industry, including demonstration of the ability to manage research activities and staff.
• Evidence of significant research outputs, demonstrated by at least 5 manuscripts in peer refereed journals, trademarks, patents, or biotechnological outputs etc.
• Evidence of taking part in continuing education activities, e.g. conferences and workshops, training in Good Laboratory Practice or other relevant GxPs, Laboratory Auditing, Quality Assurance and Compliance, will be an added advantage.
• Evidence of excellence and a passion in science, and high level of technical skills and the ability.
Key skills and competencies
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of technical laboratory workflows, equipment maintenance, quality and compliance with laboratory accreditation standards.
• Focus on excellence, as well as displaying a high level of technical skill and the ability to lead and motivate a team.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work independently and in teams.
• A sound knowledge of health and safety, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with difficult and challenging situations will be an advantage.
