ICRISAT is a non-profit international agricultural research institute undertaking research targeting the improvement of food and feed crop varieties (sorghum, pearl millet, groundnut, chickpea, and pigeon pea) and resource management technologies for poorfarmers based in semi-arid agro-ecologies. ICRISAT is inviting applications from suitable Zim babwea n nationals to fill in two (2) positions of Research Associates-Plant Breeding.

Duties and Responsibilities

Deliver the highest quality field data as part of Eastern & Southern Africa's (ESA) Plant Breeding Research and Development pipeline by providing optimal trial management at times working on an Internal R & D effort that spans across crops, sites and region

Implement unique and innovative technology solutions designed to improve research design and operations success through the use of new tools and methodologies to improve overall plant breeding phenotyping such agronomic planting, harvesting tools and shelling systems, and data capture applications

Work closely with the Lead Breeder/Scientist to deliver detailed experimental protocols that enable product advancement decisions and placement decisions to our partners

Organise & execute day to day priorities of the sites as the leader such as pre-season logistical trial planning and in-season phenotyping activities

Ensure delivery of seasonal workload by prioritising between competing workflows & through the creation of contingency plans

Expand testing networks and link with public and private sector research collaborators

Collect and lead the collection of data and summarise phenotypic and genotypic data within the breeding programme and evaluation zone to support product development and the advancement of superior hybrids, varieties and traits

Data base management and taking charge of seed movements within Zimbabwe and across the region

Liaise between private seed companies and the IP office in Patancheru on issues pertaining to the issuance of maintainer rights for varieties developed by ICRISAT

Recruit, train, develop, supervise, retain and motivate support staff to ensure timely completion of tasks

Qualifications and Experience

MSc in Plant Breeding, Agronomy or related field of study with 5+ years of significant experience in an agricultural-related research position

Broad knowledge and experience with agricultural equipment and row crop production practices and history of leveraging that knowledge in that knowledge in a research environment

Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative team-based environment

Strong computer skills related to data acquisition, organization, maintaining large data sets and data analysis History of implementation of continuous improvements and new innovations through the work on project teams

Excellent written/verbal communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, teamwork sills, conflict management and adaptability to change are required.

Detail oriented with an analytical mindset and ability to handle pressure and meeting deadlines

Valid driver's license is mandatory and willingness to travel extensively to yield trial locations across sites and spend time away from home during peak seasons
