Project: Sustainable Roots Program
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Sustainable Roots Program (SRP) is a nutrition promotion program implemented in
Buhera and Tsholotsho districts of Zimbabwe for a 5-year period. The program seeks to
support rural communities to increase nutritional status of women, children, and their households by promoting production and consumption of traditional and local foods. The program will apply regenerative agriculture, soil and water and sustainable use of forest products to meet dietary and health needs. The SRP will support communities with improved
access to water for domestic and productive use and will work closely with government
departments to ensure appropriate and synergistic implementation. The program is
implemented by a consortium led by CARE Zimbabwe and includes Organization of Rural Associations for Progress and Nutrition Action Zimbabwe.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Project Engineer will be responsible for providing technical guidance in the design,
implementation, and certification of water and sanitation infrastructure in the project in line with national/international standards. The incumbent will assess needs, develop
appropriate technologies, coordinate with stakeholders, conduct water quality testing,
supervise construction of resilience design structures, train community members and
ensure compliance with relevant standards

Duties and Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Programme Planning and Design
a. Undertakes detailed feasibility study and pre-check surveys in conjunction with
relevant government departments to determine scope of work (including person
days, food, workers).
b. Generates Bill of Quantities (BoQs), financial budget and technical design of water
and sanitation structures for the project (boreholes, sand abstraction etc.,).
c. Provides input into procurement plan (technical input, specifications, delivery
timelines).
d. Contributes to new proposal development and providing technical guidance to the
designated project field officers.
2. Training and Capacity Building
a. Training community members on asset management and maintenance, and staff on
construction standards, operation, and maintenance of created or rehabilitated
infrastructure.
3. Project Implementation and Supervision
a. Supervises the contractor / communities during the programme implementation.
b. Monitors and reviews use and movement of Programme hardware (such as NFIs,
equipment), resources and assets (such as level equipment) and monitors
reconciliation of project activities in line with the budget.
c. Develop and review operations and maintenance manuals for solar powered
boreholes and other resilience design structures
c. 4. Monitoring and Evaluation
a. Facilitates collaborative joint progress monitoring at Programme sites with
relevant government technical departments and local authorities at provincial and
district levels.
b. Prepares completion certificates of completed assets for endorsement by
communities and government authorities.
Such defect monitoring and implementation of remedial work of all the assets
developed by the programme.
5. Coordination and Communication
a. Manages Coordinates learning visits with Programme partner organizations.
b. Facilitates handover of completed livelihood assets to communities and
stakeholders.
c. Compiles and maintains asset registers for NFI materials and equipment at project
sites and preparing disposal plans for the materials

Qualifications and Experience

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related
discipline
• 4-6 years of demonstrated experience in engineering for community development
projects or a related field, emphasizing project lifecycle management
• Proven ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders
• Strong communication skills to facilitate collaboration and information exchange
• Advanced report writing capabilities, synthesizing complex technical information into
clear, concise documents
• Exceptional planning and organizational competencies
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously
