Job Description

The Law Society of Zimbabwe seeks to recruit a Litigation Officer on a full time basis. The Litigation Officer will operate under the overall guidance of the Regulatory Services, Risk & Compliance Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities
• The Litigation Officer will have the following duties and responsibilities:
• Prosecuting applications in the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal (LPDT) including the filing and serving of all pleadings timeously;
• Liaising with external Counsel on all matters assigned to external Counsel; Consolidating all monthly Litigation reports to the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee (DEC) and Council;
• Maintaining an effective Litigation Diary of LPDT matters; Attending Court and fully executing Council resolutions for all LPDT referrals;
• Monitoring of the Litigation Portfolio and taking the relevant action on all litigation outcomes including compilation of all relevant reports;
• Preparing bill of costs in favour of the Society; Drafting recommendations to the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee on all complaints where a referral to the LPDT may be necessary;
• Maintaining the Fines Register and following up on all outstanding fines;
• Analysis of the Sentencing Schedule and sentencing patterns and the development of the responsive sentencing recommendations for improved public confidence in the Society‘s regulatory effectiveness;
• Carrying out any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

Key attributes
• Experience in criminal and civil litigation in the superior courts, prosecution or a similar environment a must;
• Excellent drafting, case analysis and court-room advocacy skills;
• Good Legal research skills;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Mediation and conciliatory skills experience will be an added advantage.
Minimum Requirements
• LLB Degree from a recognized institution;
• A Masters will be an added advantage;
• At least four (4) years work experience in a litigation environment; Computer proficiency.
