Job Description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following positions at the University of Zimbabwe

LEGAL OFFICER - COMMERCIAL AND BUSINESS (x1 post)

Duties and Responsibilities


The successful candidate will report to the Legal and Corporate Affairs Director and will perform among other duties the following:-
 Providing accurate, relevant, and timely advice to the University management and other members of staff on a various legal issues that relate to the business sector and their products or services.
 Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating various commercial contracts and agreements with prospective business partners of the university.
 Managing and mitigating legal risks by designing and implementing company policies and procedures.
 Ensuring compliance with all the legal and regulatory framework that apply to the business of the University.
 Promoting legal, compliance and risk management best practice throughout the company.
 Communicating with and managing any third-party bodies such as external counsel or auditors
 Preparing legal briefs to external counsel as when necessary.
 Designing and delivering legal training to the business.
 Staying up-to-date with changes to legislation, particularly in relation to laws, rules and regulations that directly affect the business of the University the
education sector.
 Liaising with senior members of staff

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications and Experience
 A minimum of a Bachelor of Laws or Honours Degree from a recognised and reputable Law school;
 Possession of a Master’s degree in law or other relevant post graduate qualification
 A minimum of five (5) years post qualifying experience in corporate, commercial and business law environment;
 Sound understanding and knowledge of commercial and corporate law.
 Demonstrates a commercial mind-set and business acumen.
 Strong communication and presentation skills.
 Excellent negotiating and drafting skills.
 Demonstrate good knowledge and understanding of business models.
 The ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships across the business.
 The ability to communicate complex legal issues and risks in terms that non-legal colleagues can understand.
 The ability to work in a highly autonomous role with minimum supervision.
