LABORATORY TECHNICIAN – CROP SCIENCE (1 Post)
Reporting to the Chief Technician, the incumbent will serve as a Laboratory Technician - Crop Science, providing a high standard of technical support for the safe operation of teaching and research laboratories. The Laboratory technician will work flexibly to deliver an excellent student experience, support research ambitions of academic colleagues and provide a safe working environment for good laboratory and field practice.
Duties and Responsibilities: The candidate should be able to carry out field and laboratory practicals in the Crop Science discipline, including but not limited to:
Liaising with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements and teaching requirements and coordinate work in the laboratory to ensure efficient use of equipment
Operation of laboratory analytical equipment related to crop or plant sciences
Collection of samples in the field for researchers and practicals by the Department
Maintenance of appropriate levels of inventory of departmental equipment and laboratory chemical storages
Demonstration of student practicals related to crop science in the areas of: microbiology, crop pathology, plant breeding, molecular biology, biotechnology, seed science and general plant biology
Supervision of laboratory assistants, laboratory hands and laboratory cleaners
Procurement of laboratory equipment and consumables
Organisation of student field practicals, field trips and industrial visits
Installation and calibration of laboratory equipment
Designing practical schedules for all laboratory practicals in relation to availability of chemicals and equipment
Assist lecturers and students in research projects and trials
Undertake regular laboratory supervision of students at all levels
Carry out analytical work associated with teaching, research and commercial project
Develop new laboratory and field experimental techniques for practical classes
Conduct daily meteorological records, reporting monthly to the meteorological office and maintenance of the weather station
Participate in departmental income-generating projects
Assist in preparation of departmental project budgets
Service and maintain departmental tools and equipment
Any other job-related duties may be assigned.
Desired Attributes:
A Diploma in Agriculture /Applied Biological Science/ Horticulture;
An undergraduate degree in Crop Science/ Agronomy/ Crop Production degree/ Agriculture/ Plant breeding;
Professional certification or membership of relevant agricultural or laboratory bodies will be an added advantage.

At least 5 years of working in a laboratory, assisting lecturers, students and other stakeholders at undergraduate and/or graduate levels in a recognized tertiary institution.
