Reporting to the Research Scientist – The Junior Research Scientist is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the research project/s through implementing or facilitating implementation of research activities and research-related administrative functions that ensure compliance to the research protocol/s and regulations. Key responsibilities include: -
• Assisting investigators in the development of research protocols
• Development and translation of research tools/instruments, such as informed consent forms and data collection tools
• Obtaining and renewing regulatory and ethical approvals for the study protocols
• Formulating standard operating procedures to ensure that research studies are conducted according to protocol and ethical and regulatory requirements
• Ensuring appropriate community entry for research studies, including obtaining the necessary district/community approvals for the study
• Collect qualitative data using individual interviews, focus group discussions and participatory approaches
• Process qualitative data including transcription and translation
• Coordinate and oversee the secure management and storage of collected qualitative data
• Compile interview summaries, analytic memos and coding frameworks
• Code and analyze data using NVivo
• Write up research findings and submit to peer-reviewed journals
• Tracking study budget and burn rate to ensure no or over expenditure
• Procurement of project supplies for the smooth running of research studies
• Maintenance of essential study records, e.g., regulatory records, correspondence, staff training records
• Inventory management and safe keeping of study products
• Ensuring the safe and secure storage of research data according to protocol and good clinical practice (GCP)
• Training and supervision of research staff on implementation of study activities according to the study protocol and good clinical practice (GCP)
• Assisting with data analysis
• Writing reports, including manuscripts and progress reports
• Dissemination of research findings, including progress reports, submission and publication of manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, and presentation at community meetings and scientific conferences
• Any other research roles as may be assigned by the Research Scientist or Principal Investigator.
Master’s degree in a health research, social sciences or related field. At least two years’ experience in health research, including experience with obtaining regulatory approvals, drafting research tools and dissemination of findings. GCP and Research Ethics, Microsoft Office packages, Qualitative data handling and analysis software, for example (NVivo)Ability to work with people from different disciplines, Ability to write clearly in good English, Good verbal communication skills, e.g., meeting/conference presentation, Basic quantitative skills, Ability to read/interpret reports that present epidemiological information, Ability to support junior staff to perform optimally
