Job Description

The Entomologist will play a crucial role in safeguarding Zimbabwe's tobacco sector by providing expert knowledge and technical support in the identification, monitoring, and management of insect pests affecting crops. The successful candidate will conduct research, develop pest management strategies, provide training and extension services, and contribute to the overall resilience of the agricultural system against insect-related threats.

Duties and Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Pest Identification and Diagnostics: Accurately identify insect pests of agricultural importance.
Pest Monitoring and Surveillance: Design and implement effective pest monitoring and surveillance programs.
Development of Pest Management Strategies: Develop integrated pest management (IPM) strategies that are economically viable, environmentally sound, and socially acceptable.
• Research and Innovation: Conduct applied research on the biology, ecology, and control of economically important insect pests.

Qualifications and Experience

A minimum of a Master of Science degree in Entomology or a closely related field (e.g., Agricultural Science with a specialization in Entomology, Zoology with an entomological focus).
• Demonstrable experience (typically 3 years) in entomological research, pest management, or agricultural extension
Strong knowledge of insect taxonomy, morphology, physiology, ecology, and behavior.
Experience in conducting field and laboratory research.
Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to diverse audiences.
A valid driver's license.

• Experience working with specific key agricultural crops and their associated insect pests in Zimbabwe.
• Knowledge of relevant plant health legislation and regulations in Zimbabwe.
• Experience in molecular diagnostic techniques for insect identification.
