Job Description

The incumbent will be reporting to the Registrar and will be expected to provide strategic leadership in legal matters affecting the running of the University as well as the management of Intellectual Property (IP) Policies and Guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

Drafting and reviewing contracts and service level agreements;
Assisting in the development of guidelines, policies and procedures;
Analysing and reviewing legal agreements, policies and documents;
Ensuring (internal & external) compliance with laid down guidelines, policies and procedures;
Providing legal assistance/support for units and departments as may be required;
Interfacing with corporate entities and individuals over compliance and regulatory issues;
Keeping abreast with relevant legal and regulatory developments, laws and government policies;
Managing and monitoring the University's relationship with external counsel and relevant government agencies;
Preparing periodic reports for management's consideration;
Assessing and making appropriate recommendations with respect, to cases requiring external legal services;
Managing the University's compliance issues;
Liaising with Human Resources and Proctors for an effective Staff and Student Disciplinary System;
Managing legal matters, disputes, litigation and claim for the University;
Provide legal advice and guidance to the Commercialisation Thrust of the University;
Maintaining a Library of Contract Precedence;
Assisting with institutional secretariat as assigned by the Registrar from time to time.

Qualifications and Experience

At least a first degree in Law;
Three (3) years relevant work experience;
The candidate should be a registered Legal Practitioner with good communication and presentation skills;
Exposure to laws governing Intellectual Property (IP) will an added advantage.
