Job Description

Deadline: 20 May 2022

About
Founded in the Netherlands in 1998 Young Africa (YA) currently operates 9 TVET centres in five countries as a confederation of independently and locally registered affiliated organizations. YA operates in 2 more countries in partnership with 4 other organizations that are replicating the YA model(s). Each Affiliate operates TVET - Centre(s), youth (self-) employment programs and community activities.

The vision of YA is a world of quality and shared word of equality where the power of young people is channeled to transform the world around them. The mission of YA is the integral development of disadvantaged youths aged 15 to 35 years with a special focus on young women and youths with disabilities. YA does this through imparting skills of the hands to youth to make them self-reliant, skills of the heart and mind to help them live with dignity and skills of the soul to help them live with a purpose.

Young Africa is convinced that the challenges that confront youths in Africa are multidimensional and complex and thus require an integration of responses that address young people’s intellectual, economic, social, emotional and spiritual empowerment needs. Accordingly, Young Africa’s Integral Youth Empowerment Programme is made up of vocational skills training in market-related technical and commercial trades, small enterprise development services, life skills education, inspirational morning assembly talks, academic coaching and promoting talents in art and sport.

YA’s training policy stipulates 70% practical exposure on the job and 30% theory training for technical courses. To achieve this target, trainees are exposed to on-the-job training in the production unit of the franchisee. Ideally at least 3 months is spent on industrial/job attachment outside of YA at the end of the six or 12 months of training. Apart from exposing trainees to real working experience, industrial / job attachment has huge potential to link trainees to jobs.

The impact study conducted by YA in 4 of its 5 countries of operation in 2021 recommended the need to strengthen the YA Postgraduate Support programmes as a way to enhance the employability of its graduates.
