Job Description

The Database Administrator handles capacity planning, evaluating database server hardware, and manages all aspects of database including installation, configuration, design, and data migration. Additional responsibilities include performance monitoring, security, backups, troubleshooting, and data recovery

Duties and Responsibilities

Main Focus Areas
• Manage and maintain Oracle and SQL databases.
• Designing database for High Availability.
• Working on the performance issues related to Clustering, create logical diagrams to figure out the loop pools in the database designs and functionality.
• SQL tuning and optimization.

Technology Operations Monitoring
• Monitor the availability of the Database events like DB availability, Instance availability and the space availability of disk drives and file systems.
• Monitor the alert logs files, transaction logs and backup logs.
• Resolves and escalates any service disruption in line with the set standards.
• Review and update procedures and manuals in line with changes in business processes, requirements and Technology operating environment.
• Monitor the database-related activities and respond to the calls from the Application support and developments teams.
• Monitor the backups, recovery errors, respond to the request regarding the restoration of the database.
• Review systems backup logs and check compliance with data management and backup policy.
• Engage system vendors on Data support.
• Implement the resolution of all Technology operations Audit Issues within the set timelines.
• Communicate the change management activities on systems and applications in line with the agreed plans.
• Monitor the metric alerts, performance-related issues like high CPU utilization, Application performance, high Memory utilization, Application tuning and Query tuning.
• Review the Technology Operations Incidents and submit a report with recommendations to the Core Systems & DevOps Manager.

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
• Monitor and review back up and restoration operations for the disaster recovery site.
• Check that System backups are done and secured properly daily.
• Participate in IT risk assessment, business continuity planning, testing and evaluation.
• Participate in disaster recovery plan formulation.
• Review weekly restorations of backed up systems and check that these have been filed.
• Participate in system recoveries and establish emergency operations at DR site in the event of a disaster.

Staff Supervision
• Set and agree on medium and short-term objectives, develop work plans, and checks that this is being carried out.
• Coach and/or arranges for the training of staff on Departmental procedures.
• Set and agree on work schedules and targets with staff daily.
• Carry out ongoing evaluation of staff, identify performance strengths and deficiencies, and arrange for necessary action (for example further on the job training).
• Dispute resolution

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications and Work Experience
• First degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent
• 3 - 4 years’ experience in technology or similar environment
