Job Description

The National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) is inviting applications from suitably qualified, mature, honest and experienced persons for appointment to the above position which has arisen in the organization. The applicant will be based at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo and will be responsible for total management of the Gallery’s Conservation and Collections department.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Conservation and Collections Officer’s key duties and responsibilities include; preservation, documentation and management of the Institution’s Permanent Collection; acquisition, registration, cataloguing, environmental control, loan processing, records computerization, storage maintenance, arrangement and description, handling requests for photographic reprints, and retrieving materials in response to research; ensuring the security of artefacts in Gallery collection and exhibit areas; preparing facilities for upcoming traveling exhibits; processing all necessary paperwork related to the exhibits such as condition report, damage reports, correspondence with lenders, storage paperwork, etc. Schedules volunteers to assist with set up of exhibitions; creating and maintaining a complete inventory of museum collection using a computer database system; curating and exhibiting permanent collection exhibitions; research on the Gallery’s permanent collection; ensuring safety and security of collections.

Qualifications and Experience

The person must possess either a; Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology, Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies Honours Degree; or Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree Digital Archival and Historical Information Records Management; experience in conservation and collection of art works will be an added advantage; excellent skills in communication, analytical and organized; excellent in Microsoft office packages and photography; experience working in a Government setting is an added advantage.
