About
Welthungerhilfe is one of the largest, privately-held, non-denominational, and politically independent German non-governmental organizations in the area of development co-operation and emergency relief. Primarily in cooperation with local partner organizations, its task is to contribute to improved income and nutrition for the poorest rural populations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Welthungerhilfe has been implementing projects in Zimbabwe almost continuously since 1980. Currently, the organization together with its partners has projects in 5 Provinces. Sector focus is on Food and Nutrition security including WASH, and when necessary Emergency response.
Welthungerhilfe is implementing a 12-month project with an overall objective to strengthen the resilience of 3 000 most vulnerable households to climate and economic shocks and their impacts on food security and livelihoods: The proposed project implemented in Gweru will be an integral part of WHHs overall urban portfolio building on and deepening our existing work in urban areas, and our relationship with WFP. For over 20 years, WHH has been implementing resilience building and food security projects in rural and urban areas which include but not limited to: Midlands, Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South provinces: Gweru was selected as one of the domains where WHH is currently implementing a n urban resilience building project in addition to a cash transfer project which is suitable for demonstrating the humanitarian development nexus approach.
Position summary
Welthungerhilfe seeks to recruit a Communication Officer who will be responsible for writing articles for internal and external audiences thereby increasing WHH’s visibility. The incumbent will assist in organizing events, preparing quality documentaries and offer guidance on production of relevant materials on Urban Resilience building activities.The Communications Officer will directly assist the Resilience building team with management of all communication content and channels that form the Urban Resilience Building Communication Strategy. Document portfolio of evidence (focusing on evidence-based solutions).

Duties and Responsibilities

Job description
Developing, coordinating and disseminating resilience messages through appropriate channels and ensuring all stakeholders promote the messages; Provide technical support in editing, design, lay-out and presentation of communications materials including reports, presentations, posters / banners and audio / video; Take photographs and record audio and video of program activities, support field staff in their ability to document activities (especially photography), lead collection and organization of photographs from field staff; Facilitating communication trainings that promote digital literacy for the targeted beneficiaries and government extension workers; Monitoring, capturing and reporting feedback and providing technical support to Chegutu and Gweru Urban Resilience Building stakeholders; Compilation of Urban Resilience Building Newsletter, organizes events, including donor and GoZ stakeholder visits, media tours, participates in expos / conferences, stakeholder consultation meetings; Manage WhatsApp groups for various resilience building committees, Gweru and Chegutu Urban Resilience website, Facebook, videos, podcasts, print based media; Package resilience content and information for key internal and external; audiences; Plan learning events and pull together communication materials (photos, success stories, case studies, presentations) with programs staff; Coordinates communications opportunities and events as they occur on an ad-hoc basis; Facilitate capture and packaging of resilience stories and management of community feedback.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications
At least a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field; A minimum of two years’ experience in communications strategy development, public relations, journalism, or marketing; Excellent written English (including editing) and verbal communication skills; Technical skills in photography and document / presentation design required, audio and / or video production and editing, graphic design skills strongly preferred; Knowledge of and experience using social media as part of a communication strategy; Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Visio, and graphic design and photography software; Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise good judgment and solve problems quickly and effectively; Excellent organizing skills; experience coordinating large events; Energetic, motivated, positive attitude, self-starter; Great attention to detail; Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with diverse audiences, including donors; Demonstrated experience in communications in social, print and broadcast media channels; Efficient in Digital Storytelling; Current knowledge of Rights Based Programming is an added advantage.
