Job Description

Location: Harare

A leading and growing short-term insurance company in Zimbabwe, is seeking to recruit a highly experienced, strategic and results-oriented Chief Underwriter to join its Senior Management Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
• Provide strategic leadership and direction to the underwriting department in line with the Company’s business objectives.
• Develop and implement underwriting strategies, policies and procedures that support profitable portfolio growth.
• Oversee underwriting operations across all classes of short-term insurance business.
• Ensure prudent risk assessment, pricing and acceptance in accordance with delegated authorities and reinsurance arrangements.
• Monitor underwriting performance, portfolio quality, claims trends and loss ratios, implementing corrective measures where necessary.
• Build, maintain and strengthen strategic relationships with insurance brokers, agents, key intermediaries to grow premium income, identify new business opportunities to improve market share.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, Company policies, reinsurance treaties and Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) guidelines.
• Prepare underwriting reports, portfolio analyses and management information for Executive Management and the Board.
• Develop departmental budgets, monitor performance against targets and drive continuous process improvements.
• Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration and operational excellence within the department.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management and Insurance , Actuarial Science or ACII, AIISA.
• A relevant postgraduate qualification (MBA or Master’s Degree) will be an added advantage.
• Minimum of 5–10 years’ progressive experience in short-term insurance underwriting, with at least 3 years in a senior management or leadership position.
• Demonstrated experience managing broker and agency relationships.
• Strong understanding of underwriting principles, reinsurance, claims management and insurance regulations.
• High levels of integrity, professionalism and sound judgement.
