A local NGO whose mission is to facilitate the development and application of innovative approaches to improve rural livelihoods, resilience and sustainable natural resources management is seeking suitably qualified and experienced applicants to fill the position of Agro-Ecologist Officer.
Position summary
The position is needed to design and implement agro ecological businesses and sustainable agricultural practices interventions. Ensure agro-ecological viability of interventions, adoption of environmentally friendly technologies.
Main responsibilities
Lead co-design and implementation of agroecology projects adapted to the local context, including in conservation agriculture for the benefit of smallholder farmers; Consolidate and upgrade agronomic skills, from a hands-on as well as a scientific angle; Actively contribute to the rural development and transition to agricultural activities that combine economic, social and environmental change; Bring expertise on hands-on agroecology practices (soil health, soil fertility, regenerative agriculture, agroforestry) to the organisational team, partners and stakeholders and help adapt these to the local context of the project; Design procedures and conduct resource inventory, evaluation, audits and assessments for forest and woodland-based resources; Develop and facilitate implementation of adaptive management procedures for natural resources utilization; Design and implement ecological monitoring systems including determination and monitoring of extraction rates and resource stocking levels for sustainable harvesting regimes; Develop procedures and implement ecological impact evaluations; Prepare, produce and submit to donors, well researched, documented and presented project proposals that are relevant to the organisation’s main goals and activities; Co-ordinate and/or implement special projects; Prepare for and facilitate appropriate training in community based natural resources management for the organisation and its partners; Prepare and produce training material (manuals, notes) progress reports and occasional technical papers on issues related to the organisation’s work; Scout for new project opportunities, in line with the organisation’s values, and be able to deliver real, measurable transformation in the agricultural or natural landscapes that poor communities rely upon for their livelihoods.
Required skills, experience and education
A degree in Agriculture, Ecology or any other related discipline; An MSc and experience in community development will be an added advantage; Experience in statistical analysis, and natural resource management will be an added advantage; 5 to 10 proven track-record of relevant experience in propagating agroecology in developing economies, close to smallholder farmers, rural communities, demonstrating tangible achievements; Having worked in a variety of climatic and cultural contexts is a serious plus; 2 years relevant working experience after graduation; Experience in community development work.
