Job Description

The Women's University in Africa (WUA) is a private institution that was established in 2002 and granted a Charter by the Government of Zimbabwe in 2004.
The Council of the WUA invites applications for the position of Vice-Chancellor to lead the university strategically in managing a rapidly changing environment. This is an exciting post, offering an exceptional opportunity for a high performing individual to make a considerable difference to an ambitious and growing institution where her/his strategic leadership and managerial initiatives will ensure the university a sustainable and impressive growth locally, regionally and continentally.
We are looking for a pathfinder and creative thinker to lead this institution as it adjusts to the "new normal" in higher education due to the deleterious impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on teaching, learning, research and innovation in higher education and training.
WIJA aims at expanding and strengthening its role nationally, in the sub-region and on the African continent. The position will suit an individual who has an understanding of the role of the affordances of infommtion and conununication technologies (ICI's) at a strategic level so as to expand the institution's offerings, and the continuous generation of new knowledge so as to enable the university to contribute the socio-economic, and industrial development of Zimbabwe, the sub regional and the African continent as a whole.
We are therefore looking for a very experienced individual who has a full understanding of the new strategic thrust of the country encapsulated in the Heritage based Education 5.0 philosophy. This requires a very experienced senior academic who has been operating at the level of a full professor for not less than five years in a recognized university locally, regionally or globally.
Reporting to the Chairperson of our Council, and Council, the Vice-Chancellor will be responsible for leading the university strategically and so as to drive the role of the university in the key areas of teaching, student learning, research, innovation strategy, industrialization and commercialization of research projects of the University. The position requires extensive knowledge and experience in the higher education sector, impeccable academic and research credentials, including experience of leading and managing a Faculty or an experience as Pro-Vice Chancellor. We are looking for an individual with a strong track record of leading and managing in a university with leadership qualities and proven capacity at an executive management level such as the position of Pro-Vice Chancellor.
Additionally, we are looking for an individual who will strategically lead the university in coping with the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in tams of developing an appropriate university curriculum that prepares students for the future world of work in the 21• century in an African context. The successful candidatemust a respected academic and servant leader locally and regionally who demonstrates and exude integrity; standing and accomplishments relevant to growing academic institution committed to the education and training of women in particular. The successful candidate should be an academic with a sound character and wide university experience. She or he must be a scrupulous individual who is decisive and fair in terms of her or his decision-making abilities and style of servant leadership; research leadership and strategic thinking which enables effective and innovative resource mobilization to drive WUA's research and innovation agenda. We are also looking for an individual with a deep and broad knowledge and understanding of commercialization and innovation strategies to ensure that, the WUA can sustain its operations in a volatile, uncertain, changing and ambiguous environment
The prospective Vice Chancellor of WUA should also be able to develop local, regional, continental and global linkages and mutually beneficial partnerships that will benefit the institution's academic and research enterprise. As a transfommtive leader/manager, he or she should be able to demonstrate her, or his abilities that will benefit the WUA in terms of resources mobilization to improve the institution's infrastructure; disruptive online teaching and learning platforms, and technologies; and financial support to needy students who may be challenged financially.
The prospective Vice Chancellor should therefore have the ability to navigate the evolving COVID-19 crisis innovatively and ensuring that, students, staff and the institution's core business are viable and sustainable in the long term. Additionally, she or he must be a servant leader with proven strategic, managerial, and administrative abilities at an executive level; and how to build adaptive genius in the WUA as an evolving organization and academic institution. As such, we are also looking for an individual who will be committed to cementing a performance management system and culture in the WUA as a learning organization and developing effective and results-based communities of practice across the board.
Africa has a large diaspora. The Vice Chancellor of the WUA will be expected to ensure that a data base is created of Zimbabweans in the diaspora that can teach and collaborate with the WUA academics virtually in key areas such as research and innovation.
She or he must be a servant and ethical leader with a demonstrable commitment to uphold the values of the University and an ability to deal with diverse constituencies; a commitment to the transfomiation of the WUA

Duties and Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES
a) She/He will be the chief academic, administrative, financial and disciplinary officer of the University and shall:
b) Provide visionary and strategic leadership to the university, including maintaining and promoting research, innovation and industrialization as well as ensuring efficiency and good governance in the conduct of business of the institution;
c) Initiate, recommend and monitor policies, systems, and procedures that ensure sound academic and administrative functions of a higher education institution;
d) Lead the development activities of the University, the setting up of new Faculties and raising resources to support such initiatives;
e) Formulate and implement Education Programmes in line with the University Strategic Plan and in the context of the broader Heritage Based Education 5.0 of Research, Innovation, Industrialization and Commercialization Agenda;
f) Raising the University profile and its global ranking through excellence in technology-based learning, research, innovation,
industrialization and commercialization;
g) Identify and promote the development and commercialization of emerging technologies to advance Zimbabwe's industrialization and modernization agenda;
h) Ensure that the University provides technological solutions to the surrounding communities and the nation at large, with a focus on Heritage based studies;
i) Foster strategic partnerships and working relationships between and among various University stakeholders that include staff, students, the public and private sectors;
Negotiate strategic linkages with local and international institutions regarding instructional resources and the use of information and communication technologies for key academic and administrative activities of the University;
k) Attract high end skills to advance the creation of technology driven start-ups and incubation of industries to generate income for the University and employment for its graduates.

Qualifications and Experience

PERSON SPECIFICATION
a) The candidate should be a Full Professor of 5 or more years standing with an earned Doctorate Degree from a recognized University. She or he should be a seasoned academic and intellectual, who possesses the following key competencies:
b) Be an accomplished Higher Education academic or related discipline with at least 10 years working experience at the level of Pro Vice Chancellor. The successful candidate should have a proven track record for creating a technology-driven and innovative learning, teaching and research environment in a University or a Higher and Tertiary Education Institution or Research Institution;
c) Have proven management capacity including knowledge of public financial management, familiarity with the Zimbabwe Public Finance Management Act or equivalent is essential; and
d) Have demonstrable knowledge of the structural, legislative and regulatory frameworks for managing an institution of higher learning in the Zimbabwean context

3.0 REMUNERATION AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The University offers:
a) A highly attractive and competitive remuneration package in accordance with the University Terms and Conditions of Service.

c) A five (5) year performance-related renewable contract. The contract can only be renewed for two terms only as long as the candidate is under 65 years of age at the stage of appointment.
