The following vacancies have arisen within the Biomedical Research and Training Institute in Collaboration with MOHCC.

The Biomedical Research and Training Institute (BRTI) implements a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded Work Plan for the Ministry of Health and Child Care of Zimbabwe. BRTI is therefore looking for the services of medical laboratory mentors. The incumbent of this position will provide medical laboratory quality systems and laboratory strengthening mentorship at assigned laboratories in support of MoHCC and BRTI primary goal for achieving a high standard of quality of testing services at public health laboratories in Zimbabwe.

Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Mentor works to improve the quality of Zimbabwe MoHCC laboratories through direct assignment to a laboratory to observe, teach, share experience, encourage, monitor, and evaluate laboratory staff and operations. The goal of the mentorship program is to improve the quality of all testing services for a laboratory and prepare the laboratory for certification or accreditation by a recognized independent body.

Primary Responsibilities
Evaluates laboratory operations and develops in consultation with MoHCC, laboratory supervisors and staff a formal action plan for improvement based on a baseline assessment, which includes responsibilities, objectives, timelines, outcome measures and resources; Provide embedded laboratory quality mentorship to the Assigned laboratories based on the WHO-Afro SLMTA tool kit, ISO 15189 standard and other requirements to assure continual quality improvement of all laboratories in the network and prepare the Assigned laboratory for achievement of accreditation or certification; Contributes to staff skill and knowledge by individual and group teaching especially in the area of quality management systems. Encourages strategic thinking, coaches efforts in operational and budget planning, promotes professionalism and connects the laboratory and its staff to external opportunities for interaction with laboratory professionals and participation in laboratory science meeting and presentations; Plan, organize, coordinate and continually monitor implementation of strategies for ensuring Viral Load / EID or any other supported testing is optimal at assigned laboratory/laboratories. This should result in test scale-up with increased patient test coverage, reduced turnaround time, reduced rejection rates, optimal failure rates, and acceptable stock-out and equipment downtime measures; Coordinate the implementation of the specimen transport system program in your province including ensuring the proper operation of the hub-and-spoke sample transport system, participating in sensitization of clinic staff, and ensuring specimen referral and results transmission are effectively done; Contribute to staff skill and knowledge at the Assigned laboratory or at other provincial or district hospital laboratories by individual and group teaching, especially in the area of quality management systems; Coordinate the implementation of the EQA program in your province including facilitating distribution, return of results and corrective actions; Provide periodic reports, feedback and communications from assigned province including weekly, monthly, quarterly and other ad hoc reports required for compiling consolidated program reports for CDC, MOHCC and BRTI. i. Work as the provincial manager of all program activities in the assigned province/s.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge, skills and abilities in the practice and management of medical laboratory diagnostics including clinical chemistry and hematology, microbiology, immunology, molecular diagnostics and in developing and implementing a quality management system. Ability in laboratory investigative techniques, quality control, and quality assurance in a laboratory setting. Knowledge of and ability to interpret international standards documents related to quality in clinical diagnostic laboratories. Knowledge of and ability to evaluate laboratory operations according to national and international standards including ISO 15189 or WHO-Afro SLMTA. Strong writing skills for preparation of assessment reports and procedures. Experience in and ability to teach, train and coach staff in medical laboratory diagnostics and professional behaviors. Experience supervising a medical laboratory or major clinical laboratory section. Strong verbal communication skills. Ability to convey understanding and interpretation of laboratory standards including laboratory safety, documentation and ethics. Ability to act as a role model. Ability to maintain an approachable attitude, act consistently and provide realistic advice in the context of resources. Ability to work on short-term 1-2 week assignments in laboratories that may be beyond commuting distance from home.

Minimum Requirements for this position include the following
An undergraduate degree in medical laboratory sciences. A graduate degree in medical laboratory science is preferred; Six years plus experience in clinical diagnostic testing including two years supervisory experience in a clinical diagnostic laboratory; Detail-oriented with strong organizational and interpersonal skills; Excellent work record that shows self-motivation; Must have an interest in and an appreciation for quality laboratory service and strong QMS knowledge, skills and experience; Skill in use of Microsoft Office software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a team; ability to provide support to MoHCC staff; Fluent in English; Prepare the laboratory sections to seek accreditation or certification through training, improvement initiatives and preparation of documentation; Skill in assessing labs using the WHO SLIPTA Checklist and ISO 15189-based checklists; Ability to mentor, coach and supervise the planning, development and implementation of a quality management system.
