Request for a consultant to develop a Responsible Gold Mining and Trading Policy: Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA)
Deadline: 20 September 2019

Project background
Women gold miners in Zimbabwe face a lot of risks and conflict related problems. Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA) is implementing a project meant to address several risks and conflict related problems affecting women gold miners in Zimbabwe, with support from European Partnership for Responsible Mining (EPRM). The project is being implemented in collaboration with a Mthandazo women miners association in Matebeland south. The mining problems in the country include, political instability, institutional weaknesses in mining sector administration and widespread violence and criminality in the gold sector. Specific problems include; trading of gold outside the formal system (black market), foreign currency shortages, smuggling and illicit gold outflows, unfair pricing of gold by middleman and absence of a systematic way for women to document, audit and limited traceability of gold processed at the Gold Service Centre with possible links to criminality and illicit practices Further, the women miners do not have adequate access to legal assistance on contracts and agreements signed with gold traders as well as the application of international standards on responsible sourcing such as the OECD
With this background ZELA is looking for a consultant to develop a responsible gold mining and trading policy for responsible sourcing in line with the OECD standards
