Primary Project Purpose
Sizimele is a Consortium managed programme that seeks to improve the absorptive, adaptive and transformative capacities of at risk communities. The Consortium aim to bring relevant interventions, innovation, closer collaboration with private partners, synergies with the existing and new projects and a strong evidence-based theory of change that is well aligned with the Zimbabwe Resilience Building Fund (ZRBF) programme theory of change. Sizimele project feeds into ZRBF’s overall objective of resilience of at risk smallholder farmers so that the farmers are food, income and nutrition secure in the face of increasing multiple and chronic shocks and stressors. Smallholder farmer capacity for resilience is built through Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR), increased farmer productivity, livelihood diversification and system change.
TechnoServe is leveraging on its vast experience in agro-processing, value chain development, micro-insurance, entrepreneurship, access to finance and market linkage interventions to build smallholder farmer’s capacity for resilience. The program’s technical assistance package will be focusing on smart agriculture, gender integration and sustainable inclusive business models that provide value chain actors with linkages to finance, information and markets.
The consultant will be responsible for identification and engagement of relevant stakeholders to participate in consortium led value chains involving private sector companies, processors and markets. The role will include identification of value chains in need of processing for value addition, identification of relevant processing centre locations and training of stakeholders on process plant facilities and management to enhance value chain development. The incumbent will be responsible for facilitating the renovation of existing structures into fully functional processing centres, including the monitoring and provision of technical assistance in the management of the processing centre.
Analysis will include, but is not limited to, the following: Identification of strategic value chains to promote for value addition/processing in order to enhance value chain development; Asses the commercial viability of value chains selected, analyzing the pre-existing and future markets; Facilitate design and approval of required processing centres; Train stakeholders on the process plant facilities, management and processing; Monitor and provide technical assistance in the management of processing centres; Technical assistance in access to finance; Renovation of existing structures into processing centres; Address critical business growth constraints and market constraints/issues in the target value chains, analysing various challenges and developing growth strategy plans and solutions; Lead and support development of inclusive business models; Coordinate key technical activities to ensure expanded market opportunities for local farmers; Work with partners to establish a functioning market and link farmers to all agricultural services; Any other tasks within the scope of work.
Demonstrated competences and experience in carrying out similar projects; Experience in agro-processing and value chain development; Relevant educational qualifications or equivalent in Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Development; Experience in working with smallholder farmers is an added advantage; Strong analytical capabilities and proven planning and organization skills; Excellent presentation skills.
The work will provide SIZIMELE clients with the necessary agro-processing skills to scale business operations and promote inclusive business models.
Fees and Expenses
The remuneration will be in accordance with the experience of the consultant for a maximum period of 6 months, starting 1 July 2019.
Applicants with the experience, skills and expertise for this assignment should submit a technical proposal. The technical proposal should detail the following: Understanding of the Terms of reference; A capacity statement including demonstrated ability to handle the assignment; A detailed plan of conducting the exercise, with clear description of the methodology; Budget breakdown detailing consultancy and any other related costs; Current Curriculum vitae with at least three recent organizations where similar services of the consultant have been utilized including contact details and title of assignment.
