Welthungerhilfe (www.welthungerhilfe.de) is one of the largest and respected private organisations in the field of development cooperation and humanitarian aid in Germany. We carry out projects in 39 countries and campaigns for fairer cooperation with developing countries.
Welthungerhilfe (German Agro Action) PVO 21/2003 is implementing a WASH Programme in Mashonaland Central. The project is funded by Charity Global. The aim of the project is to increase access to improved water, sanitation and hygiene services for 23, 217 people in Shamva, Mt. Darwin and Rushinga districts. The specific priority areas of the project are: construction and rehabilitation of 59 wells and handpumps, rehabilitation of 72 piped schemes, 6 new and 4 rehabilitated water points and sanitation.
We are looking for suitable candidates to fill 2 positions of WASH Officer. If you are prepared to dedicate yourself to carrying out projects under sometimes difficult conditions and you match the requirements set out below, we look forward to receiving your application.
The WASH Officer is expected to
Provide support for the repair, rehabilitation and construction of all water and sanitation infrastructure that including water points and piped water schemes; Provide capacity building and skills transfer of all WASH governance structures that include local authority officials, WASH stakeholders and community WASH Committees on water point operation and maintenance aimed at ensuring long-term functionality and sustainability of the facilities; Coordinate with Senior Project Staff for effective implementation of project activities; Facilitate beneficiary mobilisation and identification; Conduct trainings and regarding operation and maintenance of water supply and sanitation facilities; Intensive and constant monitoring of borehole rehabilitation activities to ensure that all the activities are executing as per design, specifications and work schedule; Prepare weekly, monthly work plans and progress reports; Train community institutions on participatory health and hygiene; Take part in the selection, designing, pre-testing, developing, dissemination and evaluation of appropriate IEC hygiene material for effective hygiene promotion in the target area; Develop and maintain contacts with all relevant stakeholders including government
Required Education, Skills and Experience
Degree in Civil, Water, Environmental or Agricultural Engineering, Public Health, Health Promotion or related field; Competence in training and capacity building of communities and stakeholders on Participatory Health and Hygiene Promotion methodologies; Experience in the design and implementation of water and sanitation infrastructure works, development of BOQs, tender dossiers and practical supervision of construction/installation work; Familiarity with the drilling of boreholes, installation of hand pumps and headworks construction; Experience in the rehabilitation of water points, hand pumps, motorized pumps and solar powered water systems; Demonstrated experience of integrating gender and diversity issues into public health programmes; Strong community mobilization, and stakeholder engagement, project planning, interpersonal, and communication skills; Excellent report writing skills; Knowledge of computer packages including engineering drawings manually or using AutoCAD is desirable; Strong ability to communicate effectively, fluent in spoken and written English and Shona; Ability to work under pressure; Clean Class 4 Drivers’ License
