ADMISSION INTO UNDERGRADUATE BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY HONOURS DEGREE IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING 2020-21 ACADEMIC YEAR

The Harare Institute of Technology is inviting applications for admission into Part one of a five year full time Bachelor of Technology Honours Degree in Biomedical Engineering from candidates who meet the specified entry requirements. Candidates must have five “O” Level passes at grade “C” or better including English and Mathematics.

About the program
Biomedical Engineering is an enthralling interdisciplinary area of study that combines engineering with science and technology to solve medical problems in living systems. It is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering to biology and medicine. This is evident throughout healthcare, from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, and has entered the public conscience through the proliferation of implantable medical devices, such as pacemakers and prosthetics, to more futuristic technologies such as stem cell engineering and the 3-D printing of biological organs.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Biomedical Engineers are experts in designing Electronics Circuits, Embedded Systems, Imaging Techniques, Telemedicine, Healthcare
Communication and Medical Informatics. The programme is also designed to inculcate graduates with the technopreneurial skills required to create and manage high growth, scalable business enterprises. Furthermore, the curriculum contains a strong component of project-based learning to enhance the creative thinking and innovative attitudes required for biomedical engineering research and development.

Competencies
On completion of the programme, the graduates must be able:
> To design, construct, assemble and manage complex biomedical engineering projects, medical and laboratory equipment.
> To conduct, analyze, and interpret experiments and apply
experimental results in biomedical research and development.
> To apply biomedical engineering technical expertise to industry-related fields.
> To take leadership and mentoring roles during the design and implementation phases of biomedical engineering projects.
> Manage complex biomedical engineering projects that are motivational, technopreneurial and research driven.
> To apply ethical standards, principles of design for sustainable development, and environmental consideration.

Qualifications and Experience

Entry qualifications
Entry requirements for acceptance into the Bachelor of Technology Honours Degree in Biomedical Engineering programme are:

• At least three 'A" Level passes in Physics, Mathematics and a third approved subject such as Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science or equivalent subjects at "A" Level.
Or
• National Diploma in Biomedical Engineering or equivalent qualification plus a minimum of two years relevant post qualification experience.
Or
• Higher National Diploma (HND) in Biomedical Engineering or its equivalent qualification.
