Job Description

UCT Division of Family Medicine seeks a senior lecturer in palliative medicine to lead the interdisciplinary palliative care and medicine group housed within the division. The main purpose of this position is to provide strategic leadership to the palliative medicine team responding to the development of the discipline within the context of South Africa, the African continent and internationally.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities

This role includes teaching, supervision, research and social responsiveness, with attention to issues of transformation and equity. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to perform administrative functions at Divisional, Departmental, Faculty and University level if needed.
The annual remuneration for Senior Lecturer, including benefits: R 887 294.

Qualifications and Experience

Requirements:
• Hold a MBChB (or equivalent MD) and MPhil (or Masters’ degree equivalent) in Palliative Medicine.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in palliative care.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in teaching and assessment at tertiary level, including on-line and blended learning.
• Knowledge of palliative care policy making, health equity and human rights for health.
• Knowledge of low- and middle-income health systems, the health sector and its services, as it pertains to Palliative Medicine.
• Demonstrable research supervision experience at Master’s level.
• Proven track record of research.
• Excellent leadership skills and decision-making abilities.
• Excellent organisational skills.
• Ability to consult and mentor colleagues.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Ability to build and maintain effective partnerships and relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to identify and translate strategic needs into a practical set of objectives and action plan.
• Proven ability to fundraise for strategic priorities, including grantwriting.
• Ability to engage with issues of transformation, equity and diversity.
Advantageous:
• Registration with the HPCSA as a specialist Family Physician would be advantageous.
• A PhD would also be advantageous.
