Job Description

The School of Public Health and Family Medicine, in the Faculty of Health Sciences at UCT provides a range of under- and postgraduate teaching in population-based public health sciences to students training to be health professionals. The School is looking to appoint a Research Officer (Part-time, T1 contract) to commence service as soon as possible with a contract end date of 31 May 2022 to co-ordinate an exciting research project addressing Challenges related to culture, treatment seeking and service provision for substance use disorders among men in urban and rural communities in South Africa.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include
• Overall management of project, including project milestones ad timelines and budgets
• Overseeing day-to-day running of a local site in a collaborative research project involving multiple institutions.
• Preparation and submission of protocols for ethics approval and/or amendments
• Training field staff
• Ensuring team compliance with study protocols and SOPs
• Monitoring expenses within allocated budget.
• Engaging with team members in other sites and with external stakeholders to promote accomplishment of project milestones.
• Oversee dissemination of project findings to key stakeholders and the public
• Participate in conference presentations and in write up and publication of findings
• Postgraduate student supervision or co-supervision of one or more MPH students
• Contribute to report writing to funders
• Contribute to joint publications
• Participate in the general academic meetings of the School of Public Health and Family Medicine.

Qualifications and Experience

Required qualifications and skills
• A Masters or PhD in public health or related field
• At least three years of demonstrable experience of running independent research
• At least three publications in peer reviewed literature in the public health field
• At least three years’ experience in Mental Health related research
• Good project management skills and ability to manage research activities virtually (remote) including ability to manage a budget
• Experience in survey research
• Excellent computer skills, including excel.
The following would be advantageous
• A strong research track record in substance use research
• Experience in qualitative data collection and analysis
• Strong quantitative statistical skills
• Experience in managing Substance use and/or Mental health projects as Project Manager
• Past experience of post-graduate supervision
