LECTURER
FRENCH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES & LITERATURES
FACULTY OF HUMANITIES

The School of Languages and Literatures invites applications for the above post for appointment as soon as possible.
The French Section is part of the School of Languages and Literatures which offers the widest range of national and international languages in South Africa. The section offers taught courses from beginners’ level to Masters and thesis-only Masters and PhD programmes; it offers the only programme in South Africa for Teaching French as a Foreign Language (TFFL) at Honours and Masters level. The applicant will join a committed team of three scholars who share in the teaching of courses with large numbers and also smaller classes at senior levels. The applicant will be able to bring individual research and teaching expertise into the offerings of the section and contribute to interdisciplinary courses that the School offers.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be expected:
• To contribute to current undergraduate programmes at all levels in French language and literature, and to design and develop postgraduate studies in his or her field of expertise.
• To be research active, e.g., by publishing research outputs in accredited journals
• To supervise postgraduate students in his or her field of expertise
• To undertake administrative tasks as instructed by the Director of the School and the Dean of the Faculty (at least course convenorship and departmental administration portfolios)

Qualifications and Experience

Requirements
Applicants will have:
• a doctorate in French literature or a related field;
• experience in teaching French language and literature to students for whom French is not a first language;
• an ability to communicate effectively in English.
• native or near native proficiency in French.
Recommendations
• a proven track-record of research activity (i.e. publications in journals and books);
• experience in teaching French language and literature at tertiary level

The Appointment will take place in alignment with the Faculty’s expectations for performance at this rank.
The annual cost of employment for 2020, including benefits at lecturer level, is R730 510.
