Duties and Responsibilities

The Reader Services Librarian works in a team environment and is responsible for planning, promoting and teaching information literacy, providing reference services, and developing print and electronic resources and services.

General responsibilities include:

Be responsible for all phases of operation of the Reader Services Section including supervision, hiring, training and evaluation of staff in Reader Services;
Supervise Reader Services programs and activities;
Prepare documentation, budget recommendations and other reports as needed;
Covers circulation desks and performs circulation tasks including check in, check out, registrations, renewals, reserves and searching.
Monitor the processing of new patron applications; collect statistics, ensure that all patron contacts are completed;
Dealing with user enquiries via the library staffed enquiry points in addition to telephone and on-line enquiries. Contributing to general library services.
Responsible for processing of overdue, inactive recall and other letters and required reports such as reserve problems and patron-due-for-service. Files claims with vendors for materials not received, damaged or having other problems
Participate in stock selection, Data quality control, Stock inventory,
Ensure cash handling, health and safety for human resources and other University procedures are followed.
Act as liaison for the Division to coordinate joint projects with other library sections;
Provide Reference Service for Library patrons. Resolve patron initiated problems or concerns through phone contact and correspondence;
Work with discipline faculty to develop appropriate ways to infuse information literacy across the curriculum. Assess and evaluate information literacy initiatives. Design innovative multimedia and web-based instructional materials.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications, Experience and Key Attributes

BSc in Library and Information Sciences
Any First Degree and a Post Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Science
Two years experience in an academic library setting.
Knowledge of Machine Readable Cataloging records (MARC) used in cataloging and basic familiarity with library cataloging standards such as Anglo- American Cataloguing rules
Knowledge of automated library and information systems and current technological developments.
Knowledge of current practices, new technologies, and trends in bibliographic control is expected.
